A Contemporary Approach to a Classic Method
At Pilates at Sarah's, our instructors are highly trained in the STOTT Pilates method. But what exactly does that mean, and why does it matter for your workout? STOTT Pilates is a contemporary, anatomically-based approach to Joseph Pilates' original exercise method.
Modern Biomechanics and Rehabilitation
Developed by physical therapists and sports medicine professionals, STOTT Pilates incorporates modern knowledge about spinal rehabilitation, fascial integration, and biomechanics. It refines the original exercises to ensure they are as safe, effective, and anatomically sound as possible, reducing the risk of injury and maximizing functional benefits.
Focus on the Neutral Spine
One of the key differences in the STOTT method is its emphasis on maintaining a neutral spine—the natural, shock-absorbing curvature of the back—during many exercises. Unlike classical Pilates, which often utilizes a flattened back (imprinted spine) for all exercises, STOTT recognizes that training the body in its natural alignment translates better to everyday functional movement and posture.
The Five Basic Principles
STOTT Pilates is built on five core principles: Breathing, Pelvic Placement, Rib Cage Placement, Scapular Movement, and Head & Cervical Spine Placement. By mastering these foundational principles, clients learn profound body awareness, ensuring that every subsequent exercise is performed with maximum efficiency and safety.
